Menachem at the White House
On Monday, December 18th, together with 13 Jewish leaders of higher education, JHP Director, Rabbi Menachem Schmidt, Executive Director of JHP and Vice Chairman of the International Foundation of Chabad on Campus, were graciously honored by meeting with President Bush in the Roosevelt Room, West Wing of the White House. The meeting was called to discuss how higher education can be used to influence and teach our young on the ideals of world democracy & freedom from a Jewish perspective. As Menachem affirmed, that is a time when a great opportunity exists as personalities are formed & students have a tremendous amount of freedom. Menachem’s personal invitation and participation at this meeting demonstrates the effectiveness of his efforts & the efforts of JHP in general.
Menachem said that President Bush was extremely engaging & seemed to be a real mensch. The President’s love for Israel & the Jewish people were obvious. The President’s personal feelings, policy & perspective on Iraq & the Middle East were discussed off the record and candidly. Menachem expressed that it was an exciting, stimulating, amazing & most memorable event & one that made him feel proud to be an American.
After the meeting, participants attended a much larger Chanukah reception in the East Wing of the White House. The food was Glatt Kosher and the reception was quite a thrill. Of note, quite a few JHP mentors were there as well.
