A Hero in Heaven
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A pre-Thanksgiving initiative, to benefit the memory of Michael Levin, in support of the Israeli Lone Soldier Project, a 5K run, at Cass Park in Binghamton was held last Sunday. This magnanimous effort was organized by JHP interns, Alex Bluganim, Adam Goodman, Rachel Aarons & Eugenia Baskin. 50 Binghamton students took part in the run.
Born and raised near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Michael grew up in a traditional, loving Jewish household. In 2003 he made Aliyah & joined the elite paratroopers. After returning to the USA for a visit, when Michael Levin heard about the outbreak of the Israeli-Lebanon war, forthwith he returned to his former unit in Israel. Seven days later he was killed. Michael Levin (z"l) was the personification of the word "hero." He made the ultimate sacrifice for the Jewish State and the Jewish people. He was the first American killed in the Lebanon war.
A few years ago, Michael joined a JHP trip one summer & we both were granted the pleasure of spending time together.
"You can't fulfill your dreams unless you dare to risk it all"
Penn JHP illustrious interns, Samantha Wertheimer, Melissa Siegel & Mieka Lewis planned & executed a Jewish JHP Alternative Thanksgiving Dinner last Monday night. This dinner was JHP freshman interns' first event & welcomed by Lindsay Teich, JHP fellow & Rabbi Ephraim Levin. Turkey sandwiches, cranberry juice, pumpkin muffins & dressings were the bill of fare.
At the "Thanksgiving Dinner," Rabbi Levin expounded on the meaning of being thankful. Then the students in turn, round the table, each told what they were thankful for & most averred that they were very much looking forward to going home & spending time with their families.
NYU JHP Mock Japanese Thanksgiving
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
25 NYU JHP interns met at Justin Schanzer's (JHP fellow) residence in Manhattan for a mock Japanese Thanksgiving Dinner. Sushi was the bill of fare here. All the students joined in thinking about what they are thankful for and started talking about the upcoming Jewish Holiday of Chanukah & what they are planning for JHP events on campus for the holiday.
