Experience Art in All Its Splendor as an Expression of the Jewish Soul-Pain, Beauty, Love, Fear-All of Its Truth.
Jewish artists have been respected contributors to music, film, theater, visual art, and their activities encompass fine art, painting, sculpture, dance, theatre, architecture, printmaking, esoteric, creative writing, photography, mass media, and popular culture forms. But what is "Jewish Art?" Any art produced by Jews? Any art with Jewish content? Is there a distinctive Jewish style?
A new series of classes that examine how Judaism looks at self-expression through art, music, and through life in general are underway at JHP's Old City Jewish Art Center (OCJAC) conducted by Rabbi Menachem Schmidt. Topics range from:
A Jewish Guide to Expressing Oneself through Art and Life
Self Expression
Other Forms of Artistic Expression
A Deeper Look into Art
Lessons to Be Learned From All of the Above
Lively and Open Discussions
In true spirit: artists, dilettantes, tyros & inquiring minds welcome!
Class Schedule: Monday: Nov. 5, 12, 19, 26 at 8:30 PM
Admission is free. Refreshments served. OCJAC 119 North 3rd Street, Philadelphia, PA. Please RSVP: 215-923-1222
Israeli Soldiers at Binghamton
Last week during a Shabbos dinner in the Chenango Building at Binghamton, two Israeli soldiers, Avishai Horsky and his friend Yarir who fought in the Lebanon conflict described their traumatic experiences while in combat. The event was put on by JHP interns Lori Seidman and Isabel Roitman & was advertised all over campus.
Avishai said, "In Israel there is a sense of togetherness. Since there is mandatory military service, we all share such a strong bond. When I walk the streets of NY, I could sense how everyone is alone. This is one of the greatest things about my country."
The two Israeli soldiers who fought gave a critical account of the war revealing close confrontations with Hezbollah, emotions they dealt with, the faith that they relied on & the ideals that inspired them to a mesmerizing crowd of JHP students on campus.
