Through JHP's efforts, 160 students are now in Israel as part of a Mayonot Birthright Trip. These students are experiencing an inside look at the life of Jews in Israel and the sites and links that connect them to their glorious Jewish heritage. JHP/Chabad Rabbis Ephraim Levin and Menachem Schmidt are with them as educational and spiritual guides.
The following is a short interview with Shane Kleinstein, a sophomore at Penn on the JHP/Birthright Trip.
Editor: What was your first impression of Israel?
Shane: "As soon as you get off the plane you feel more connected as a Jew. It is very exciting."
Editor: How has being in Israel affected you?
Shane: "Being in Israel has solidified my Jewish beliefs culturally and religiously which have always been there and being here made them real."
Editor: Where are you now and what has been and will be some highlights of your itinerary?
Shane: "Today we are in the Jewish Quarter of Old City and on our way to be in a tent in the Negev, the Bedoin community, then on to Masada. We have visited historical synagogues in Szaft and have been at the Wall. Highlights of the trip besides those include going to Jerusalem, Haifa, Tel Aviv, the Dead Sea, rafting down the Jordan River & hiking the Golan."
Editor: What has been your most inspirational experience so far?
Shane: "Without a doubt it has been being at the Wall. You feel so spiritually connected to being Jewish. Everything became real at the wall. I was very affected."
Editor: With a few more days left on your trip, what would you personally like to do?
Shane: "Being in Israel has affected me so that I am extending my trip. I have a strong desire to link further to my heritage. I have brothers here and want to spend time with them. I also want to see Israel on my own. I was so inspired and moved being at the Wall that I will definitely spend Shabbos at the Wall in Jerusalem."
