Heart & Soul at Binghamton
In Israel, “Save a Child’s Heart” Organization’s activities spread to Binghamton with the assistance of our JHP Fellow, Anna levy, once again. She put together a fundraiser for this organization, incorporating the help of 300 Binghamton students including JHP interns who sent out greeting cards mentioning JHP involvement to 300 other students, requesting a Dollar. Besides helping this wonderful organization who funds heart transplants for Israeli children, this secondarily results in 600 people involved in JHP. “It was very exciting,” as Anna explicated, “I thought is was great. I walked around and asked people about it and they all said they really enjoyed it and wanted to know when the next JHP event will be.”
A Jewish Moslem Descendent of Muhammad, Speaks to JHP students during Shabbos Dinner at Pitt
Joseph Hashimi, born in Afghanistan and whose father is a Moslem and direct descendent of Muhammad, a Moslem cleric, spoke to JHP students at a Shabbos Dinner organized by Ilya Bratman, JHP Fellow. His father came to USA to study engineering and met his Jewish to be wife in 1967 in Arizona. They wed and moved to Afghanistan, where they lived a very rich, JHP Royal life. When things got tough there, they gave up all, including palaces and the wealthy life and moved to Arizona. Their son, Joseph Hashimi was born and they brought him up Jewish. Joseph graduated Harvard, raised 6 kids and has a very successful business and he is now Lubavitch. His father, still Moslem, goes to shul with him. The JHP students were mesmerized while listening intently and then asked many questions and a discussion continued even after the dinner was over. Joseph and his family now live in Pittsburgh.
JHP Succeeds in Turning on Greeks
Last week, JHP interns under the guidance of Lindsay Teich, JHP Fellow, held a call-a-thon for Shabbat 2000. As a result, by JHPers calling Penn students, friends, and other organizations on campus, 1640 people have so far made reservations. This was and is being accomplished by the more than casual involvement of A E Pi, T E P, Alpha Phi, Chai-O, S D T, and Tri Delt, all Greek organizations on campus. Will Morel, JHP assistant Fellow, is President of A E Pi. JHP excitement at Penn is catching.
