Hayley Barton, JHP's New Assistant Fellow At Penn
"On coming to Penn I wanted to find some sort of Jewish involvement where I could connect to other Jewish kids like me. I found that & more in JHP." - Hayley Barton, Penn '08
Through former Assistant Fellow, Jeff Salomon, Hayley was introduced to JHP. She was immediately drawn to the camaraderie of other Jewish Students. After this initial thrust, Hayley wanted to make contributions helping other Jewish students through JHP activities. She was also very happy to find a connection to her Judaism on Penn's campus.
Since Hayley's involvement from 2004 through her present senior year at JHP she has been an intern & lead intern specializing in publicity & social activities, performing these tasks exceptionally well. She has also performed exceptionally well in her academic pursuits being a psychology major with a minor in creative writing.
Due to her past performance & personal aspirations, Hayley was selected to be a JHP Assistant Fellow working with Lindsay Teich at Penn. Her present contributions focus on increasing Tzadakah initiatives & adopting innovative social programs.
Outside of JHP Hayley has made other altruistic contributions to help others. She has designed a program to create personalized storybooks for young children with learning disabilities & she hopes to create an actual organization to further this endeavor. She also can be spotted globetrotting to different destinations around the world. In May, Hayley will be going to Israel with JHP on the Birthright trip.
We all here at JHP look forward to working with Hayley this spring semester.
Penn Shabbat Food Competition; Student Role Model Mentoring
As the first week of classes resume at Penn, JHP got off to a voluminous start at its first meeting on Penn's campus. JHP soundly re-established popular programs & ingeniously prompted new initiatives for the semester.
A long proven mentoring program with prominent professionals took new directions. In addition to the students being formally mentored by professionals, freshman & junior students will now be informally mentored by chosen role models closer to them, students in the senior class who they look up to. Individual meetings will take place on campus, at coffee klatches & at other venues producing ongoing relationships.
New for the semester, themed dinners will radiate Shabbat at Penn, each dinner with a different theme. One such theme first under consideration is a Pre-Shabbat cook-off, food competition among participating students. Other Jewish themes will follow.
A new Tzadakah initiative is underway & will be ongoing. JHP students will select a Jewish charity in the beginning of each semester & rally for the cause, collecting funds 'til the end of the semester. All proceeds collected at the end of the semester will be given to the charity.
The first orientation meeting for Penn students interested in the Prague Alternative Spring Break was held on campus where they went over the tentative itinerary. Applications were sent out January 22 & students will be notified in the beginning of February. The selected students will leave for Prague March 9th, 2008. |
