Long Day’s Journey into…..Shabbos in the Holy Land
What some students do during break……
As mentioned last week, 40 some JHP, mostly Penn students traveled to Israel with Mayonot and arrived not a minute to soon, for Shabbos. They celebrated Chanukah in addition to seeing the sights and experiencing the Holy land first hand. From sleeping in a kibbutz, benching Chanukah lecht, visiting & praying at the Wall, touring Jerusalem, Shabbats celebrations & dinners, the students visit the Holy sites of our ancestors as well as ride camels and plant trees. Strong personal and communal identities with being Jewish are anew, rekindled and reinforced by this wonderful trip.

Quote of the Week
“Israel was a life changing experience for one and me that I can’t stop thinking about. When asked to write a fun experience or fond memory of the trip it’s hard to just pinpoint one. The entire trip was filled with a million memories: hiking up Meade, floating in the Dead Sea, hiking the Golan Heights, walking the beach in Tel Aviv, going to the Holocaust Museum, the Fallen Soldiers Memorial, great friends & great times… but I guess nothing adds up to Friday night spent at the Wall. To see the hundreds of Jews all standing and praying at the same place is an amazing picture – a picture worth more than a thousand words. It was at that moment, when all the girls were standing in a circle & holding hands praying that there was nothing on my mind but being a proud Jew. I believe it’s where I truly found my ‘Jewishness’. It was the most moving experience, and so many parts of my Jewish heritage came out through parts of the old city, walking through the quarters, putting a prayer in the Wall, and indeed praying on Shabbat evening.”

JHP-A Deeper Look
One of JHP’s goals is to identify and strengthen the Jewish connection within all of us. In this sense, JHP here on Penn’s campus is an outlet for Jewish college students to vicariously experience our glorious heritage so evident in Israel.
